A little bit of history
The Saint-Michel Gate is THE most emblematic historical monument of the medieval city of Guérande. With more than 6 centuries of history, it was in turn a lodging-castle at the time of the Dukes of Brittany, a prison during the Revolution, a town hall from 1815 to 1954 and a museum from 1928.
Its monumental architecture still bears witness to the prestige and power of the city in the Middle Ages. During the course of history, it was the seat of political power and quickly became a symbol of the city's identity. Classified as a historical monument since 1889, it is the scene of the greatest events in Guérande.
Your visit
After spectacular restoration work, we can once again explore the Saint-Michel Gate and marvel at its newfound splendor. Thanks to its exhibition, it will no longer hold any secrets for its visitors. The visit ends on the ramparts in order to contemplate a stunning view on the medieval city.
